Mukti Zaenal Asikin was born on 18 October 1957, and is an influential figure in the fields of economics and anthropology. Currently, he is completing his doctoral studies as a PhD Candidate in Development Studies at Satya Wacana Christian University (UKSW), having previously earned a Masters in Management at the same university. His undergraduate education includes two degrees from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), namely Bachelor of Economic Anthropology and Bachelor of Cultural Anthropology, which gives him a holistic insight into the interaction between economy, culture, and society.
With more than 25 years of experience in small business development, Mukti has established several laundry and homestay services in various major cities in Indonesia. He is also active in technical assistance for MSMEs, focusing on local and regional economic development. In the course of his career, he has worked with international and government agencies, involved in projects in Southeast Sulawesi, West Kalimantan, Papua, and NTT, and served as Chairman of the Fertiliser Supervisory Board and Director in various organisations.
Mukti is also a prolific writer, with publications that include research and reports related to economic development and regulation. His works, such as ‘New Papua Development Programme’ and ‘Regulatory Impact Assessment – RIA’, have become important references in the field. In addition, he received an award from the Indonesian Ministry of Industry in 2014 for his dedication to small industry development and also received an award from Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft for management studies.

Moh Jumhur Hidayat, better known as Jumhur, was born in Bandung in February 1968. Since his college days at the Bandung Institute of Technology, he has been known as a vocal student activist, leading demonstrations against government policies deemed unfair, particularly regarding land grabbing from poor farmers. His commitment to fighting for the rights of the people landed him in jail for three years in 1989. After his prison term, Jumhur continued his education in Engineering Physics at the National University and earned a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Indonesia in 2013, deepening his understanding in social and economic analysis.
Jumhur was also active in international solidarity movements, taking part in demonstrations supporting peaceful protests in China in 1989 and organising actions critical of Myanmar’s military regime. He continued his career by joining various NGOs focused on empowering micro and small businesses, as well as leading the Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Seluruh Indonesia (KSPSI), one of the largest labour organisations in Indonesia. In 2020, he was again involved in controversy when he rejected the Omnibus Law on Job Creation, which resulted in a ten-month prison sentence.
As Head of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers (BNP2TKI) in 2007, Jumhur focused the agency on combating human trafficking and protecting Indonesian workers abroad. He has also been active in international training and seminars, including attending the International Labor Conference (ILC-ILO) in Geneva and speaking before multinational executives and international organisations on political reform in Indonesia.
Jumhur has published numerous papers and books, including ‘Honest to Habibie’ (1999) and ‘Letters from Prison’ (2000). His latest work, ‘Bumiputera Menggugat’ (2022), marks his commitment to social and political discussion.
